Find a comfortable position. Remain either seated or lying down, whichever feels right. Hands resting gently. Jaw soft. Eyes closed or lowered. Let the body arrive and become at ease. Take a slow breath in through the nose. And a gentle breath out through the mouth. Breathe in slowly. Breathe out gently. Repeat.
There is nowhere to rush. Nothing to prove. Nothing to fix. This moment is simply for being.
Scripture whispers, “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10 NIV)
Like a soft blanket, stillness wraps gently, bringing comfort and calm.
Noticing the Body
Bring awareness to the body. Notice where it makes contact with the floor or the chair. Feel the steady support. Allow the shoulders to fall away from the ears. Let the forehead smooth out and release tension. Allow the hands to loosen and relax completely. The body is not an accident. It is not an obstacle to overcome. It is sacred.
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit…?” (1 Corinthians 6:19 NIV)
Imagine the body now as a quiet sanctuary, a safe inner space for contemplation and communion with God. A small chapel. Warm light coming through the windows. Safe. Held. Holy. With each breath, imagine the doors of this inner temple opening wider, creating more space for God's presence.
Inhale… light. Exhale… tension.
With each breath, the mind imagines releasing what has been carried. There is permission to rest.
Noticing the Mind
Now gently notice the mind. Thoughts may still move through like clouds across the sky. There is no need to chase them. No need to fight them. Simply observe. And let them sail by. If the mind wanders, gently return the awareness to the breath.
Inhale… Exhale…
The prophet Elijah once searched for God in wind, fire, and earthquake. But the Lord came instead in the quiet.
“After the fire came a gentle whisper.” (1 Kings 19:12 NIV)
Picture that whisper now. Soft. Tender. So close. God is not shouting to be heard. God is near. Waiting in the silence. Let the mind grow quiet enough to listen.
Noticing the Spirit
Now bring awareness deeper. Beyond the body. Beyond thoughts. To the place within where spirit meets Spirit. Scripture promises:
“The Spirit of God lives in you.” (Romans 8:9 NIV)
“He lives with you and will be in you.” (John 14:17 NIV)
Not far away. Not someday. But now.
Imagine a gentle, inner light glowing in the center of the chest, symbolizing God’s presence within. Warm. Steady. Alive.
This is the Breath of Heaven.
The Spirit of God dwells within you. With each inhale, that light grows brighter. With each exhale, it spreads peace through your whole body.
Breathing in… presence.
Breathing out… peace.
Remain here, breathing slowly for a few peaceful moments.
Receiving His Peace
If there is heaviness in the heart, notice it. If there is grief, stress, or weariness, notice that too.
It does not need to be hidden. Gently place it into God’s hands.
Hear the invitation:
“Come to Me… and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28 NIV)
Rest is not earned. It is received.
Imagine laying all burdens down at the feet of Jesus—releasing the worries and feeling free and supported. Watching concerns grow lighter. The nervous system softens. The breath deepens. The soul settles.
“Truly my soul finds rest in God.” (Psalm 62:1 NIV)
Embrace a deep abiding rest.
Waiting in Silence
There is nothing left to do. Simply wait.
“The Lord is in His holy temple; let all the earth be silent before Him.” (Habakkuk 2:20 NIV)
Sit in that holy quiet. Remember that silence is not empty; in this quiet, there is a fullness, as God is present and close. Silence is full of God.
“In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength.” (Isaiah 30:15 NIV)
Quietness is strength. Stillness is trust. Waiting is worship. Stay here, breathing gently for several moments.
Returning
Begin to notice the body again. The air on the skin. The room. Wiggle the fingers. Roll the shoulders.
Carry this truth: You are not alone. You are not abandoned. You are a temple filled with the Spirit of God.
“The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you.” (Romans 8:11 NLT)
His peace remains present. His breath sustains all things. His presence remains. Take one final slow breath in. And a long breath out. When ready, open the eyes gently.
Go in stillness. Go in strength. Go in the peace of Christ.
