The Wisdom of the Pelvis

What the Anatomy of the Pelvis Reveals About Our God-Given Creativity

“Immersed in the practice of creating, all things that exist were birthed in Him.”
John 1:3 Voice

As a voice of wisdom, the pelvis speaks of rooting, grounding, stability, and connection and is associated with safety, trust, security, and survival. Moreover, it is associated with creative power, dreams, visions, sensuality, and passion. Running the gamut from surviving to thriving speaks of nurture, development, rejuvenation, imagination, originality, ingenuity, and resourcefulness. In our most basic primal state, the pelvis calls us to protect ourselves to survive. Once our needs are met and we can function in relative safety, we look beyond our survival to the survival of our species. We look to connect to mate, procreate, and give life—ensuring our genetic DNA carries on through our children and future generations.

The pelvis is a beautifully designed bowl-like structure. When seated, the sitz bones (ischial tuberosities) located at the base of this bowl-like structure (ischium) are the place of connection to the Earth and of stability, support, and grounding. Spiritually, this is where we connect to the earth God created and where our creative center connects to the Source of true creativity, THE Creator. This bowl-like structure is also designed to cup and hold that which is to be birthed, especially in females, where it holds life as it grows and develops into a baby. In pregnancy, the pelvis holds the uterus, where the zygote is created, the embryo forms, and the fetus grows. Just as a bowl holds, it also pours out. At the right time, the pelvis is also the place that gives birth to the baby, releasing it into the world with great determination and travail. Again, this is true spiritually as well as physically. Associated with the womb, this is where dreams are conceived, cultivated, nurtured, gestated, borne, and birthed into reality.

Anatomically, the pelvis contains our reproductive organs, as well as the “end” of the digestion system (colon, rectum, anus) and urinary tract. Many anatomy releases are eliminated, and “let go” is here. Additionally, the pelvis structure and its related muscles connect the upper body (spine/sacrum) to the lower body (femoral heads), making it a significant transition point in the body. The iliopsoas muscle group, composed of the psoas major and minor muscles and the iliacus, connects to the spine in the same region as the diaphragm and then runs down through the structure of the pelvis and is attached at different points to the lumbar spine, the iliac crest, and the hip joint at the femoral head—connecting upper body to lower body. It is the muscle group at work in most daily activities—sitting, standing, walking, running, and even dancing. It has also been found to influence breathing and respiratory rate (due to its connection to the diaphragm), as well as the health of the pelvic floor.<1>

Due to its anatomical significance, like a superhighway interchange, this region can get clogged, bogged down, and even come to a complete stop. If your back has ever “gone out,” or you’ve had a bladder infection or severe constipation, then you understand. Blocked energy in the pelvis can show up as infertility, digestive and urinary tract issues, and maladies of the reproductive organs, including problems with the pelvic floor. Blocked energy in the iliopsoas muscle group might cause tightness and tension, resulting in SI joint and IT band issues and balance issues. Much of our trauma (including difficult childbirth experiences) gets lodged here, as well as feelings of anxiety, depression, worry, overthinking, disconnection, exhaustion, anger, and tension. If one is not securely grounded, they might feel unsteady, scattered, or “all over the place.”

With its significance as our God-given creativity center, energy blockages here can also reduce or completely block our creativity. When one is not grounded, stepping into new and greater levels of creativity is hard. Or one might have manic levels of creativity but no groundedness to turn those ideas into reality.

Pelvis Exploration:

Suggested Posture: Reclining Butterfly. Lying on the floor or supported by an angled bolster, place the soles of the feet together with your knees bent and wide open to the sides. You can also add “windshield wipers” at any point to help release the hips by placing the soles of the feet wide on the floor and dropping one knee down toward the opposite ankle, switching sides, and then moving the knees back and forth, from side to side, like windshield wipers.

With your Breath as your anchor, travel down through the energetic voices of wisdom from your throat, neck, across the shoulders, and back in and down to your heart, solar plexus, and gut, and then drop down out of the gut space into the PELVIS. This voice of wisdom is a place of creating, holding, and releasing. Do you sense tension, and if so, what is this voice of wisdom revealing as to what might be stuck there?

Breathe into that tension, allowing each exhale to release stuck energy or creative blocks.

Pause to focus on releasing through your exhalations.

When you are ready to continue on…

This voice of wisdom also asks us to listen to the dreams and visions within, to give them a place to develop and grow until they are ready to be released to the world for others to be blessed through your offering. What legacy is God birthing in you?

Every inhalation receives the gift of creativity from the Source of All Creativity. Imagine God’s Creative Spirit swirling and dancing within you with each breath. What is the Creator birthing inside you?

Pause to focus on receiving God’s Creative Spirit within.

When you are ready to continue on…

End with this Prayer for Our PELVIS:

God, you are a Healer, Artist, and Potter.
We seek you, Lord, and ask,
What movements of beauty are you painting?
What containers are you molding and forming?
How can we create alongside you to bring beauty to this world?
What are you healing in us so we can join you in co-creating?

God, you are Creator, Mother, and Midwife.
We seek you, Lord, and ask,
What are you creating, nurturing, and birthing in each of us?
What dreams and visions do you have for
Your kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven?
How can we work as midwives alongside you, Mothering God?

Show us, Lord.
Reveal to us what you are healing, creating, and birthing.
Bring Your Light and Love to Us…
And to your world.
